Banned Books Poster

This assignment instructed the class create an all type poster design for Banned Books Week 2023. We needed to include a quote from the book as well create our own body copy explaining why the book was banned. I chose to do "The Shining" by Stephen King for my poster as it was banned for its depiction of alcoholism, domestic abuse, mental health, and supernatural horror. I read the book in high school and have seen the movie a couple of times so I thought it'd be a good choice.

Eventually, I came up with the typewriter type figure idea, but it took a lot of brainstorming because a lot of my ideas were more influenced by the movie, which is a good bit different. I'd say the one thing I struggled with this poster was the conceptual unity. Making the quote, type figure, body copy, and overall concept of the poster all relate to why the book was banned was a bit challenging. Overall, with it being our first project in this class to involve color, I am proud of how it turned out.

We were given 4 colors at random and 1 of our choosing to use within the poster. The color I selected was the maroon for the background, I think it was a good choice as it worked well with my other colors and related to the bloodshed and horror associated with the book. Below are some color studies which were used to help decide the best placement/use for each one.
